Gratitude ~ Day 10

Seven years ago this fall, we walked into a tiny old building to attend a gathering at a new church that had recently started in town.  We had visited different churches off and on for years and always Garth loved one that I hated or vice versa.

This was different.

There was something fresh and exciting happening.  The teaching staff was young and energetic.  We were coming in on the ground level of something big.  We began attending regularly and I was immediately drawn in by the music.  It wasn’t long before I auditioned and began singing with the worship team, and became close friends with the lead singer and pastor’s wife.

Seven years later and we are still attending that same church in a recently renovated space and with a new lead pastor.  The founding pastor is still in ministry having planted another new church in a neighboring community.  I’m still singing on the worship team, and today, I’m thankful for the opportunities God has given me to grown in my faith and friendships.

Having grown up in the church, I’m familiar with many of the stories, the Sunday School songs and have been in my fair share of Christmas pageants and Easter cantatas.  Yet this faithwalk, this relationship, this dying to myself daily and following Christ – it’s different from when I was a child.  And I wouldn’t be where I am today without the guidance of those around me.  Today I’m beyond grateful for the chance to live and learn alongside some amazing people.

Gratitude ~ Day 9

Today, I’m doubly grateful!  I got the brilliant idea to clean our carpets this week and yesterday, my mom came over to lend a hand.  The process was rather simple, once I got the hang of how the machine worked.  Many refills and emptied buckets of unsightly filth that had been camping out in our carpet later and things looked pretty good.  I finished up about 25 minutes before she arrived home from collecting the kids at school!

Anyone who’s ever cleaned carpets will know that they were still very wet, which meant that we were camped out in our kitchen where we had the dining table pushed to one side to accommodate the temporary addition of the loveseat!  It made for comfy cuddling, but it wasn’t the greatest plan for the entire evening.

With Garth still at practice and Grandma headed home, the kids and I ventured outside to give Carbon some much-needed exercise.  That led to finishing the scavenger hunt we had started earlier in the week, which led to attempting to build a fire in the pit to burn up the last of the old sticks and logs.  We collected whatever paper products we could find (in the kitchen since our paper recycling was off-limits in the laundry room).  We finished off the butane torches from the kitchen and attempted a few matches.  We had some great flames of paper, but nothing would catch that wood on fire.

Finally, with tears and requests for a warm bed, we headed inside to clean up.  That got us nice and warm.  We ate a quick bite in the kitchen and around 7:00, all four of us tiptoed our way across the damp expanse of the living and stairs into our bedroom (thank goodness I didn’t clean every carpet in the house!).  Piled onto the bed, we read a couple chapters of One Dog and His Boy while Seneca promptly fell asleep in my arms (I guess there was some truth behind her plea for bed!).

Everyone settled in, Seneca on a makeshift bed of pillows on the floor, and Calder on the antique couch I’ve had since I found it for my college dorm room.  We were all sleeping soundly quite early.  A few times, Carbon needed to go outside, and at one point, Seneca climbed in with us.  Around 4:00, Calder came over and climbed in as well, at which point Garth took up his position on the couch, leaving me and the kids in our queen bed.

Today, I’m thankful for this house we’ve made a home.  For clean carpets that force us to spend a little more time in closer quarters, and most of all for the amazing man I married.  His love and kindness knows no bounds and his selflessness is beyond measure.

Gratitude ~ Day 8

For some reason, I couldn’t get my text to show up when I originally posted this picture.  In any case, this was a fantastic find in our mailbox and a terrific way to begin our weekend.  I’m so proud of our little guy and as a teacher, the power of this positive communication is such a reminder that it is much more effective and necessary than all those other kinds of phone calls or emails home!!

Today, I’m thankful for my amazing son and for our friends and colleagues who are offering him valuable knowledge and skills for the future!

Gratitude ~ Day 7

Today, I am thankful for health, healing and faith.  It’s been a tough few weeks having lost my cousin in a car accident mere weeks before he would be turning 25.  And mine is by far the only loss as of late.  The beloved mother and friend, the precious infant – and just today, we heard of another accident that has left a woman in critical condition.

I heard the news as I was sitting on the floor, sorting toys with the kids.

“Let’s pray, guys.”

Seneca folded her hands and offered to pray.

Tonight, I am thankful for faith and for knowing that our kids are watching what we do.  I too, pray for healing, comfort for Melissa’s mother.

Gratitude ~ Day 6

“You mean I get to leave class early for a doctor’s appointment?” she asked, eyes gleaming.

“That’s what I mean,” I said as I kissed her goodnight.

I enter the main doors and round the corner to the main office.  There, through the picture window, just barely peeking over the sill she sits with her grey sweater dress and shoulder-length blonde locks.  I notice a haphazard blue hair clip dangling near her ear and smile knowing she must have found and added it after I dropped her off this morning.

When she sees me, her face brightens.  “Mama!”  she says.

“Ready to go?”

“Uh huh!  Just like we said last night.”

Today, I’m thankful the feel of her hand in mine as we jump over puddles to visit the pediatrician.
