Nothin’ but blue skies

I know I’ve been a little MIA lately, so I wanted to send a quick hello from The Lone Star State!  That’s right, Little Miss Seneca and I have been here in lovely San Antonio since late Wednesday evening.  We left a frigid 30-degree dreary Michigan day (where ironically we had to board the plane right on the tarmac instead of using a jetway) and landed in an almost balmy 60-degree Texas.

Seneca was an amazing traveler – she has flashed her stunning smile to countless people so far on our journey.  She’s attended a few writing project sessions and will enjoy some time on the river walk tomorrow evening.

My first presentation today went quite well and we’re looking forward to a great round table discussion tomorrow as well.  I’m hoping to capture a few decent shots of this cool city – including the Calder sculpture we pass on the way to the meeting location.

As for more posts, sadly, they will have to be saved until because it costs ten bucks per day, per COMPUTER (that’s right, not even free room wireless) to have access.  What kind of racket is this becoming?

I’m going to hit the sack for tonight in hopes of getting a few hours of quality sleep before putting in another long, productive and exciting day of conferencing again tomorrow!

Peace, y’all!

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Mom

It’s funny because of all the things that are running through my mind about you today – the years of church programs, late night talks, extra-curricular activities, church camp, shopping, arguing, hugging, crying, and laughing – the one that stands out most clearly is my overwhelming desire to say, “Thank you!”

I remember throughout many of our late-night talks hearing some variation of “when you become a mother….”  I figured it was just something that all moms said, just “because.”  And while I’ve been known to have a hard time admitting that you were right about something, I am finding them unbelievably true throughout my experiences thus far.  There really is no way to describe the sickeningly sweet combination of love, hope, anticipation and apprehension that is motherhood.

The hopes and dreams I hold for my kids are the same that you held for me.  The possibility that something could happen to one of them causes me physical pain.  The unspeakable need to keep Christ at the center of my life so that He might guide me to make the right decisions becomes more evident each and every day.

Becoming a mother myself, has taught me, more fully, what it means to be a daughter.  I can only pray that someday my own children will think of me with a fraction of the love, respect and admiration that fills my thoughts of you.  As you enter this new year, I hope it is filled with more blessings than your heart can hold!

I love you, Mom!  Happy Birthday!

Backsliding

So tonight I recorded my first official gain.  I’m certainly not thrilled about it, but I also expected it.  I guess that my 2.8lb loss last week makes the one pound gain a little less disheartening.  I think the most frustrating part is that I’d started out doing really well last week.  Enjoying our amazingly beautiful days I went for 2 walks a day for 2 days, plus enjoyed a couple of outdoor runs.

I think all that exercise made me a little cocky.  I started getting a little lax about my food choices.  It also didn’t help that for some odd reason I decided to whip up a batch of saltine cracker toffee.  It’s definitely a yummy treat, but certainly not core!!

So, I’m back on track this week.  It helps that my 5k Turkey Trot is only 2 weeks away, and I know that next week will be a little weird since I’ll be heading to Texas.  Now, I if I can nip this headcold in the bud, I’ll be all set for a great weigh-in next Tuesday!

Photo Contest

Among their great giveaways, 5 Minutes for Mom is also hosting a photo contest sponsored by Prego.  Now that Calder is getting a little older, I’m finding meal times to be quite adventurous.  More often than not, we end up going right from dinner into the tub.  I especially love his hands-behind-the-head move which does wonders for his hair!

While it was tricky to choose just one of a growing number of favorite food photos, this one still makes me smile.

Innocence

Here’s hoping we’re one of the finalists – we’ll find out next week!
