Family Christmas ~ Round One

Is it just me, or did anyone else hear a bell?  While we did go see Four Christmases with our family on Thanksgiving, and we might have related to a few small parts of the film, we really do look forward to family get togethers!

We began our holiday celebrations with my dad’s side of our family way back on the 20th.  With more than enough food to feed a small army we ate our way through the afternoon and enjoyed the laughter and lounging that family and holidays often provide.  With a few shutterbugs in the bunch and a whole bunch of crazy characters, here’s a glimpse at the afternoon.

Best Shot Monday ~ Wonder

What a difference a year makes!  From the wary glances shot around the room to the less-than-thrilled attempts at pulling out tissue paper and crinkling the festive wrappings we now have a very intent toddler.  His eagerness and interest are still thoughtful as they have not yet turned into the frenzied tearing and thankless playing that I fear may be lurking somewhere, waiting to emerge at the next birthday or holiday.

From across the room I can only image what words of encouragement Daddy’s whispering to him as he searches for the perfect place to begin the unveiling.  Perhaps he too senses my unspoken desire and is offering sentiments that instill thoughtfulness, gratitude and patience.

Calder and Dad

Slowly, he pulls back the wrappings and shares the joy with those who found joy in giving.  This was the manner in which he opened most of his gifts.

Presents

I’m not sure what he was watching here.  It may have been wrestling cousins or uncles or crisp white snow piling up outside the patio door.  Whatever it was, I adore his expression.  The innocence and excitement, the near disbelief that he gets to have this much fun.  That he is surrounded by so much love, generosity, and happiness.

When life gets to be too much to handle and the weight of responsibility rests heavily upon my shoulders, I pray that this image of freedom and joy will help me find my center.  And for you, my precious boy, I long for your wonder to grow as you continue to learn about the true meaning of Christmas and one day accept for yourself, the greatest gift ever given!

Christmas Wonder

This is my best shot today.  To see what is brightening the lives of others this week, head on over to Tracey’s.

Dumb luck

So, I didn’t plan on posting the results of my weigh in this week, knowing full well what I’d willingly shoveled into my mouth this week!  In fact, I really had to muster up the gumption to even go to the meeting to weigh in at all!  I figured, I needed to take the good with the bad, and accepting the responsibility of my choices was the right thing to do.

My honest hope was to have a gain of no more than five pounds.  Imagine my surprise when the numbers rested nearly three pounds less than my last weigh in!  That’s right, I somehow lost 2.8 pounds this week!  I well aware of the likelihood that my holiday noshing will catch up with me next week…but knowing that I made progress will help keep me a little more accountable over the coming week!

O Christmas Tree

Growing up we always had a real Christmas tree. I recall a few years of going out to cut it down…but mainly I just remember having it and getting it all dressed up. When I was really little we always got smallish trees and stood them on top of our coffee table so we had enough space in our little apartment. I remember the big tangled mess of the super big, glass bulbs, you know, the kind that get really hot and typically break in storage throughout the year.

Dad, in his lower-than-bass voice would always sing “O Christmas Tree” complete with unique verses he’d make up on the spot. My first year in college we were going to go get a tree together, but time got away from us and we never made it. We strung a small strand of colored twinkle lights around a floor lamp and called it good. I think it was after that year that Mom went for the artificial tree with themed ornaments which didn’t include the garish blinking-tinsel star.

Four years ago, when we moved into our house four days before Christmas, the first thing we did was hang our stockings on our very own mantle. The fireplace may not be functional, but the mantle is something more than I’d ever had! We then set up the small fiber optic tree Garth had gotten me two years earlier – our Christmas traditions had begun. We outlined the deck in white rope lighting that promptly blacked out in odd patches. It looked terrible!

The following year we hung icicle lights around our front porch and decorated our modest prelit tree, filling it with the few ornaments we’d purchased together combined with those we’d received as wedding presents and Garth’s 20+ stars – one for each year.

We’ve incorporated a similar tradition for our kids. They both received a “First Christmas” ornament as a gift…here’s Calder’s from last year, and Seneca’s was packed before I could snap a picture. Calder will be getting snowman ornaments, and Seneca is a stocking. It’s so fun seeing Garth’s ornaments from years and years and knowing we have that history on our tree. I can’t wait to send our kids’ ornaments with them when they move out on their own!

A fun photo taken at our family get together at Aunt Julie’s house.

Ornament 2

A star (or snoflake ornament) on the real tree we had at Garth’s parents’ house. As we carefully placed our ornaments in storage for the coming year, we toyed with the idea of going for a real tree beginning next year. There’s something about that whole experience and sharing it with our kids that tickles my soul. What tree traditions do you have in your family?
