12 weeks + 99% positive attitude * 3x workouts = 36lbs lost

If you would have told me in mid-August, as the sweltering summer heat was making me very conscious of my sweating rolls of chub, that I would be able to a) run a 5k and maintain a 2-mile per day workout and b) lose 36 pounds without feeling deprived I would called you crazy.  Yet here I am – 3 months later and 36 pounds lighter (-4.2 this week!) to say that it really does work.

This is my third time joining Weight Watchers, and I really do believe that it is the most balanced and realistic approach to weight loss and lifestyle change.  I remember the first time I joined there was a woman who came in and was totally serious and determined to meet her goal without messing around.  Then there was me.  I was gung-ho for a while, but then began to slack.  Plateau.  Cheat.  I played games and convinced myself that I was really doing all that I could, knowing full-well that I wasn’t.

This time, I wanted to be that woman.  So far, I have.  With one week of maintaining and one week of a half-pound gain, I’ve managed to drop every other week.  Honestly, I’m starting to get a little freaked out.  Especially these past two weeks.  I’ve really started to get lax in my devotion to making the right choices.  I almost feel like I need a bad weigh in to movitate me to get back on track.  But who am I to argue with the scale?!

Seriously though, it’s amazing how much better I feel and how much energy I have these days.  The simple fact of taking control over my food choices and my level of activity has made a dramatic difference in all areas of my life.  Knowing that my goal is in sight, it’s pretty exciting to think about the possibility of reaching it by the holidays and then working to maintain.  I hope that all your weight loss or fitness goals are going well or that you’re able to find the motivation to take things to a new level.  I’d love to hear your stories and could use some affirmation or new motivation to stay on the straight and narrow myself!  One thing I’d love to learn more about is spinning.  I’d like to find a class in the area, but I don’t know if there is any “equipment” that you need and/or if it’s worth the cost of a gym membership since. I would also have a pretty hefty drive which (to keep with the math theme of the post) is directly porportionate to the number of times I would opt to stay home.  Spinners – please chime in!

Happy Birthday Honey!

My Dearest Garth,

As I sit here, wrestling with our son to keep his drool-covered hands off the keyboard I can’t imagine being in a better place.  Even with the piles of laundry gracing our couch, the weeds and unwanted leaves adorning our yard, everything about our humble life is perfect.  Not in the true sense of the word perfect, but in the individualized, absolute match, I-wouldn’t-trade-it-for-the-world sense.

You know I love you, but today, this special day, it’s worth saying again (and for all to hear read).  I adore you.  From the precise way you fold your napkin to your willingness to take on any task or challenge.  You’re the perfect man for me.  Whether it’s a gentle word or the strength of your embrace, you always know just what I need, often before I know that I need it.

Preparing for your surprise party this weekend, I realized just how much I need you; how well we complement one another.  We make an amazing team and I am awed by the fact that I am blessed to spend the rest of my days with you.  What did I do to deserve such a blessing?

I hope that this year – this thirtieth year – that your wishes come true.  Mine already have.  I love you, babe!  Today and always!

~Yours

Digital Camera Contest

So, I’m still new to the whole blog and contest thing, but I’m willing to give it a whirl.  I really think that I’m in this as a way to “force” myself to do the writing that I want to be doing in the first place.  I’ll admit that those crafty folks whose blogs I read have me motivated to try new things and take on more hobbies than those I conjure for myself.

In any case, there’s a pretty sweet give away taking place at Five Minutes for Mom, so swing by and check it out.  The pink number is decked out with a “ribbon-clad lanyard” and carrying case in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sunday at last

Well, I have to say that this past week has been completely crazy, but in an exciting way.  First, I’m proud to report that after only two weeks (I know, I know) I have ALL my students’ neighborhood map projects, the 8th grade descriptive paragraphs and 7th grade comic strips scored and returned to students.  I think all I have to do now is enter those final scores and update Edline!  Oh yeah and check their DGP Grammar pages from last week….does it ever end?  Seriously though, I was practically giddy on Friday night and Saturday morning!  We’re just about to start our first novels in class and I’m excited about using Blackboard to facilitate online book discussions…hopefully it goes well.

On the homefront, things are going well too!  Calder now has had the pleasure of switching from rice to oatmeal for his morning cereal and has been formally introduced to carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, peas and green beans.  He loves them all!  He’s also working on the early stages of crawling, which include “swaying” on all fours and occasionally face-planting when he pushes forward too eagerly.  It’s so cute to see his little diaper-bum sticking up in the air as he figures out these new-found tricks.  We’ve also upped the drool factor as of late, so we’re expecting to see a little chomper any day now!  Luckily he’s not been terribly fussy…yet!

In more exciting family news, we had a successful surprise party for my “old” hubby on Saturday.  After a few weeks of strategic planning, the event went off without a hitch…well, without any that really impacted the party anyway!  I’m sure I’ll be spending a few weeks hunting down clothes, shoes, and/or books that my little Miss Micah so beautifully stowed in our attic space as a last ditch attempt to “clean.”  Why is it that I constantly give away my little secrets?

There’s always something so rewarding about seeing hardwork and planning come together.  For those of you who helped make it possible – a HUGE thank you!  For those who couldn’t make it, you were certainly missed!  And for those of you who graced us with your presence…thank you for sharing in the festivities!  It’s times like these that I’m awed by the true blessing of family and friendship!  Below are a few photos from the day….there weren’t many due to a full memory card (oops!).  And I still haven’t figured out how to tweak my photos in just the right way so you can click them and see them in Flickr….but as always you can click the Flick link on the right and see any of the pics there too!

10.20.07 082Pretty cool hostess gift I received from my Aunt Cheri.  I guess you can pick up personalized wine bottles from Vintner’s Cellar in Kalamazoo.  Pretty sweet!  Can’t wait to try it!

10.20.07 071 (2)The “you got me” look after I made him close his eyes so I could lead him through to delicious aromas in the kitchen into the dining room for the big surprise!

10.20.07 073“Proudly” presenting the pumpkin spice birthday cake I tried!  It turned out really well, except for the slight “sagging” on either end.  Definitely a recipe I would try again.  Oh, and the onion dip too – it went so well that we should have made two!  Bonus is that it’s really easy!!

A few fall frolicking pictures…..

Sara’s Writing

Draft 1

This is our way,
A precise script of action,
Orderly and accurate,
On step after another.

It’s all unspoken
The tango we dance
Around the fire.
Dad, barefoot,
Takes the greater risk.
His uniform is variations on the same theme:
Paint tattered shirt (or shirtless)
Chewed cigar
The Paella hat.
Vino (in bottle or glass)
All necessary for this perfect dance.

We both play our parts,
Our practice evident
Yet the pace harried.
In and out the ingredients fly,
changing by the recipe-
mountain or port paella.
Calamari- in and out
Shrimp- in and out
Chicken or pork flash the pan.
Rosemary scents the flames,
Garlic coats the oil and onions.

We move as necessary
Adjusting the fire, the pit, the pan.
Each ingredient layers flavors
with the others.

Paella, however became the answer.
Realization hit me one day,
Between the olive oil and saffron.
This is our way

Oh, we’ve had our flubs-
A sandy paella or two
But we’ve learned-
Jim and his Rita.

Draft 2

On making paella

There’s an unspoken rhythm
to the tango we dance around the fire.
He leads, I follow-
Our practice evident ,
the tempo rapid.
Dad, barefoot,
takes the greater risk.
His tattered shirt (optional)
flutters in the fire’s waves of heat.
In and out the ingredients fly,
changing by the recipe-
mountain or port paella.
His frayed paella hat
shades his eyes from the setting sun.
The calamari enters and exits.
A splash of wine hits the throat
Shrimp- in and out
A cigar slowly burns from the edge of the tray
Chicken and pork flash the pan.
Another swig of wine
as rosemary scents the flames
and garlic coats the oil and onions.

We move as necessary
Adjusting the fire, the pit, the pan.
Each ingredient waltzes
among the others.
Our dance continues
between the olive oil and saffron.

Oh, we’ve had our flubs-
A sandy paella or two
But we’ve learned-
Jim and his Rita
